The Maze Runner is a four book series written by American author James Dashner and so far the first two books (Maze Runner and Scorch Trials) have translated into hit movies, is this the start of a new franchise obsession for readers like me? I think so.
This book interestingly breaks a dystopia male protagonist into a market currently obsessed with the genre but not necessarily the gender. We are all familiar with the trope of the teenage girl living in a hostile world, who finds herself thrown into a quest because of how painfully special she is, Dashner's character of Thomas tells us his story in a refreshingly new mindset.
Thomas arrives to start the story with no memories of his life, past or surroundings, labelling him a 'greenie' in the eyes of the surrounding characters of the glade. Since we, as readers, are equally greenies to the situation we get to slowly unravel the mysteries of the story with Thomas, making the set up of this fantasy world created by Dashner natural to unveil and easy to understand.

| What the film lacks in time to adapt the events of the book, it makes up for with bad-ass leather-clad men. |
We follow Thomas and grow to love the hardy 'gladers' as they try to find a way to recover all of their memories and escape the maze that they have found themselves trapped in. But there is plenty of speculation left as to whether the outside world they are trying to discover is really the freedom they've dreamed of...
The series is a fast paced fascinating mystery that is beautifully set up to fit us into the action. The monsters make your heart pound, the characters become your allies, and the secrets leave you desperate to keep reading. For any fans of dystopia fiction, I cannot recommend this book enough!
